Another great story by coldsmith, maybe his best so far. I think it's my favorite. It's about a wealthy father (Don Pedro Garcia) who is willing to spend whatever it takes to find his missing son. (Juan Garcia). The Don is suspicious that the man who says he knows where his son was last seen is a fraud, but he must know whether his son is alive or dead. The Don outfits an expedition to New Spain, where his son was on patrol in the Spanish Army, and he sails with the expedition, hoping his guide is not a fraud, and hoping they find his son. We know his son is alive, for his son is now Heads Off, the chief of the Elk-dog band of the People, married with two children. News travels fast on the prairie, and before the Don's party is within a hundred miles of the Elk Dog band, Heads Off father in law, and other members of the tribe, know of the expedition coming to their land. They hide this knowledge from Heads Off because they are afraid Heads Off will leave and go back with his father to Spain. The Head Splitters get involved, and almost wipe out the expedition. Read what happens.

closure for heads off
This gives closure to Heads Off 's concern for his Spanish family. Well written as are all things by Coldsmith. It is a poignant and touching account of a man's search for the son he loves and believed dead. One feels the excitement he experiences at learning his son may be alive in the new World, and there may be a way to find him. It is also a touching story of how the goodness in man can overcome the greed that can cause us to take advantage of those in sorrow. It cements Heads Off decision to remain with The People for there is no longer a reason to return to Spain.
