I must admit, first and foremost, that I was attracted to this wonderful book by the art of Alan Lee. In fact, I honestly see this volume as an "art book" - meaning no disrespect towards David Day. Mr. Lee is without a doubt one of our present ages most talented and prolific artists.Whether it be his pencil work or his color (I do particularly love his pen & ink illustrations) Mr. Lee seems to quite easily transport the viewer into this world of heroes & maidens, of ogres & orcs, the castles, valleys & mountains that make up the wonderful landscapes the he so marvelously brings to the page. I want to believe that his worlds do exist - the fantastic creatures and people of both history and literature. And if they don't, they certainly should.
