Inscribed on the first page: "A Ervin Bech, como en recuerdo de su visita a mi casa en Costa Rica. 1974. [stylized signature]" ("To Ervin Bech, in remembrance of his visit to my house in Costa Rica. 1974"). A novel about a peasant's stay in an infamous Costa Rican island prison, written by Sánchez while incarcerated there. The book was smuggled out and went on to become a bestseller, and Sánchez one of Costa Rica's best-known authors. This book was made into a movie in Mexico in 1974.
