Having read non-fiction accounts of submarine warfare during that time period, I found this to be a good representation of naval warfare in WW2. Cooke weaves a story around a similar incident, the sinking of Shinano on her maiden voyage, and throws in personality conflicts, power struggles, suicide, and a love story (sort of). It really captures the bravery of submarine sailors, who are unlike anyone else. I wondered more than once how they would find a way out, when everything seemed to be against them, but the once dejected crew had learned by the end of the book, to work well together, under the exceptional leadership of Captain Jack Tremain.
