Water has always been the one thing lacking in many parts of the west, and water was what Jim Martin needed to make his land green and lush, so he could support his family. He tried every thing under the sun to try to obtain water--every known means of rainmaking--and everyone had failed. Then he hears a tale about a "rain tree" that is the supposed source of water on a ranch in Rock Springs. It is his intention to obtain a sapling from this tree, plant it on his land, and thereby have all the water he needs. Of course the populace thinks he is crazy, even his wife is skeptical; his son gets into fights; yet he prevails and plants the tree. To say this tale is rather mystical and fantastic is true, but the real issue is what the coming of water does to Jim Martin and how he accepts and relates to his change in circumstances. If you like Will Cook, then you will like this book. If you have never read one of his works, then this is a nice introduction to him. He is one of the best western novelists to have ever written of the people and places in that part of the United States.
