Will Cook was a very prolific author during the 1950's and early 1960's creating some memorable and remarkable western fiction during that time. With the publication of this book Leisure Books began to print the Three Volume Saga of Texas in its completed form. The three books which make up this trilogy were previously printed by Bantam books in 1961 (2) and 1965 in much shorter versions. The middle book was filmed starring Richard Widmark and James Stewart using the title Two Rode Together. This book was originally published and titled, The Peacemakers. Will Cook writes masterfully when it comes to the cavalry and anything pertaining to the army in the old west. Blending history and fiction in an accuracy that few other writers can, Will Cook gives you a sense of what it would be like to be right there in the action. Until Day Breaks begins the story of one man's fight to establish a peaceful solution to the "Indian" problem and how to maintain a peace. General Tracy Cameron assigns Second Lieutenant Jim Gary to try and persuade General Sherman not to attack the Comanches. Meanwhile Quanah Parker is amassing the tribes, the Kiowa and Cheyenne nations, in an alliance. The buffalo hunters are the real problem, though, as each side readies for war. A very good book.
