He did not use their peculiar form of language or adopt the primitive style of dress. Had he done so, no one would have supposed him to have been educated in any other creed or sect than this. His daily walk was expressive of his Christian faith and practice. Consistent and firm in his own belief and hopes, no one suffered in the most remote degree, in varying from them. Firmness without bigotry, charitable without indifference, respecting and respected, benevolent in heart, in speech and action, he passed away, as gently as an infant's shimbore; and his family and endeared friends, the community and all who knew him, arc conscious of his death, in the void that no one fills, in the loss of his endearing associations and influences upon the better nature of humanity. Loving and loved at his hearthstone, honored and respected by all whose privilege it was to be in contact with him, he has gone! The currents of active life may roll on, regaining their unruffled surface which his death disturbed, yet they carry him not into oblivion or forgetfuluess. Though dead, and sleeping ' that last sleep that knows no waking," his memory is as green as the laurel wreath with which his brow may have been adorned if less repulsive to his gentler nature. In concluding this simple tribute, sincere though imperfect, the obituary notice that was published in the Providence Daily Journal, of October 20th, and the action of the Rhode Island Bar before the Supreme Court, on October 21st, 1868, arc appended as its more fitting close.
