Green illustrated paper covers (color reproduction of Cox's mural of L'Enfant presenting his plan for the capital city to Washington, 1791) with light bumping increasing to edges and corners, mild surface wear. Binding tight, pages clean and unmarked. Documents the murals painted by Allyn Cox (1896-1982) in the House wing corridors of the U.S. Capitol between 1973 and 1982. The Hall of Capitols (completed 1974) depicts the 16 buildings in which Congress and its predecessors have met since 1754, with 12 portraits of persons associated with the Capitol; Great Experiment Hall (dedicated 1982) presents 16 major paintings on the growth of American democracy, from the Mayflower Compact to Washington's Farewell Address and beyond. Each panel is reproduced in color with an explanatory text, with diagrams keying the position of every mural, portrait, and vignette. Includes an account of the planning and painting of the murals and of the projected third series on westward expansion.
